trauma therapy that works
Momentum Psychotherapy is a small group of therapists, specializing in the treatment of trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and emotional overwhelm. Our work is rooted in deep clinical training and years of experience helping people navigate the complex effects of trauma.
Momentum grew out of Columbus Park—New York City’s leading center for eating disorder recovery—where for close to two decades, we saw repeatedly how addressing trauma creates profound, lasting change.
Whether you’re navigating the impact of a single event or the lasting effects of childhood trauma, we’re here to help.
trauma takes different forms
Trauma can touch our lives in many different ways—through a single overwhelming event, repeated exposure to stress, or experiences rooted in early relationships. Whether you’re carrying the impact of something sudden or something that unfolded over time, we understand how trauma shows up and how to treat it.
early/attachment trauma
Rooted in early caregiving disruptions like neglect, instability, or unmet emotional needs.
single-event trauma
A one-time experience that overwhelms the system—like a car accident, assault, natural disaster, or sudden loss.
ongoing/repeated trauma
Trauma that happens over time, such as abuse, neglect, chronic invalidation, or bullying.

grounded in research. shaped by your needs.
our approach
At Momentum, we use evidence-based therapies like EMDR, DBT-PE, and somatic approaches—established treatments proven effective for trauma recovery. Our work is grounded in clinical expertise and shaped by your individual needs, goals, and pace. We don’t follow a one-size-fits-all model—your healing is personal, and so is our approach.
It starts with a complimentary phone consultation. This first conversation is a chance for us to begin getting to know you—your history, needs, and what you’re hoping for in therapy. From there, we’ll match you with a seasoned therapist and recommend an approach that’s best suited to your goals and your healing process.
-
EMDR iis a structured therapy that helps people heal from trauma by processing distressing memories in a new, less overwhelming way. It uses bilateral stimulation—often through eye movements—to support the brain’s natural healing process. EMDR allows you to release the emotional charge of past experiences without needing to relive every detail.
-
Somatic Therapy focuses on how trauma is held in the body, not just the mind. Through gentle, body-based techniques, it helps you become more aware of physical sensations, release stored tension, and regulate your nervous system. This approach can restore a sense of safety and connection from the inside out.
-
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) helps people heal from trauma by identifying and challenging unhelpful beliefs related to the event. It focuses on shifting patterns of guilt, shame, or blame that often keep trauma symptoms in place. Through structured reflection and dialogue, CPT supports clearer thinking and emotional relief.
-
A structured, evidence-based therapy that helps people reduce PTSD symptoms by gradually and safely confronting the memories, emotions, and situations they’ve been avoiding. Over time, this process can lessen fear and reactivity, helping you regain a sense of control.
-
DBT-PE is a treatment that combines the structure of Prolonged Exposure with the emotion regulation skills of Dialectical Behavior Therapy. It helps people process traumatic memories while staying grounded and safe. This approach is especially helpful for those with high emotional sensitivity or a history of self-harm.
